- About DOVE | DOVE
WE BELIEVE EVERY HOME SHOULD BE A SAFE HOME At DOVE, Inc. we believe all people have the right to live without fear of abuse. Since our founding in 1978, DOVE has expanded from a crisis hotline to a multi-service organization providing comprehensive direct services and support for victims of dating and domestic violence, as well as their children. DOVE works with adults, elders/seniors, teens, and children who have been abused emotionally, financially, physically, and/or sexually. DOVE’s services include crisis intervention, danger assessment and safety planning, supportive counseling, emergency shelter, legal advocacy and representation, and community outreach, education, and training. DOVE remains the only domestic violence shelter and community-based service provider based in Norfolk County. DOVE strives to educate individuals, families and the community at-large to help change the societal conditions that allow domestic violence to persist. Our efforts address the isolation and vulnerability faced by victims of domestic violence and the enormous emotional, psychological, and financial toll violence takes on victims, their children, and the community. In addition to offering services that increase the safety of survivors, DOVE conducts outreach and educational presentations about domestic violence to civic and community groups; churches and faith-based organizations; schools, colleges, and universities; and many more. DOVE provides training for health and social service providers about working with survivors, as well as to businesses and employers regarding policies and practices. All of our services are grounded in survivor-centered, trauma-informed approaches. We respect each person’s right to choose their own path. We offer our resources and expertise to increase safety and access to supports in order to promote well-being. We assist individuals who are at different places in their process, exploring options in the community, pursuing legal remedies or seeking to leave an abusive relationship. We do not tell a person what to do, but rather we support individuals in making their own decisions. Our services are confidential and offered with compassion in a comfortable setting. Become a Holiday Donor DOVE’s Holiday Assistance Program assists families during the holiday season, who may be living in our emergency shelter, transitioning out of shelter into their own housing for the holidays, or who are struggling to make ends meet while building a stable, violence-free life. How does it work? Donate Goods / Provide for a Family: Contact DOVE to donate to one of the families we serve in our Emergency Shelter or Community-based Services Program. Donors are given a specific family’s wish list. Families can be as small as a single individual and as large as a parent and 6 children. Donors should plan to spend roughly $100 per family member. Wrap and deliver: Purchase wrapping supplies and bring them along with your gifts (please do not pre-wrap). Help make someone’s holiday warmer and brighter! Interested? - Emergency Shelter | DOVE
EMERGENCY SHELTER DOVE provides emergency shelter for survivors fleeing domestic violence. Our gender inclusive shelter provides refuge for both single individuals and families. While in DOVE’s shelter, program participants are supported to ground themselves after crisis or a period of homelessness. DOVE Advocates use trauma informed practices to help survivors look inward as they begin to discover who they will become in the aftermath of abuse. DOVE Advocates also assist program participants to seek transitional and/or permanent housing, to connect children with school and education, and to begin planning for life beyond the shelter. Upon moving out, our program participants are able to continue to work with the staff as they transition towards self-sustainability.
